The Pop Cycle

Like art, music has cycles, particularly pop music. No matter what era a pop tune belongs, it comes around again and again, reborn, reworked or just ripped off and recycled. The secret of pop art is taking cliché, iconic, or obvious subjects and transforming them into something new, vibrant, and relevant. This week, DJDeedle applies the pop art method to pop music, taking some of those tired and overworked sounds from the pop cycle, and giving them new meaning.

Man vs. Machine

In our increasingly computerized and automated world, we humans may find ourselves wondering about our role: are we the masters of our technology? Have smarter, faster machines bested us, and made us obsolete; or worse yet - made us slaves to our very inventions.

This week, @DJDeedle explores this tension between man and his technology. Is it really true that machines merely do the work, while people can think? Are there things that man can do that machines will never match? Or will man's ingenuity get the best of him?

STS-∞

The space shuttle, that icon of American space ingenuity, is scheduled to serve its final mission early next year. Known officially as the Space Transportation System (STS), the missions have been more or less sequentially numbered from the first launch on April 12, 1981.

Though the final shuttle mission has not been set in stone, NASA's latest suggests it will be STS-134.

STS-134 Description: Space shuttle Endeavour will deliver an EXPRESS Logistics Carrier-3 (ELC-3) and an Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to the International Space Station.

DJDeedle remembers vividly that first launch and successful landing, as well as the two tragic shuttle accidents.  This week's Deedlecast is a salute to the era of the space shuttle and all the brave folks on those missions. The STS program may be ending soon, but the missions will continue forever in our hearts.

Space Race

September is all about space on Deedlecast this year. DJDeedle starts off this month-long space odyssey by saluting the space race, that golden age of manned space exploration when the US and the USSR competed to outdo each other and be the first to land a human on the moon. The adventure continued in the 1970s with further Apollo mission lunar landings, the rendezvous with the USSR's Soyuz, and ultimately, Skylab from 1973 to 1979.

Here's to those brave days of manned space flight and exploration, humankind's destiny.

Alt*Funk Alliance

The rebellious sounds of alternative rock and funk join forces this week, combining their strengths into a complex groove. Electric bass and drums move front and center, with the distinctive beat of funk rock, funkcore, and electrofunk moving nicely through the mix.

Great and Powerful Oz

The classic film, "The Wizard of Oz," premiered in New York on August 17, 71 years ago. In celebration of the anniversary the Wizard himself has turned the machinery of Oz over to DJDeedle. The people of Oz know how to party, and the sounds they like to move to have come a long way since 1939, no Lollipop Guild here. This week, the man behind the curtain is DJDeedle.
