Who Does It Better?

Here it is, the last Deedlecast of 2006, it's inaugural year. Not to worry, though. DJDeedle has all sorts of great things already planned for 2007. And though some may do it better, no one brings it to every week like your humble dj. Don't forget that DJDeedle brings it to you live once again at the Duplex diner Saturday, December 30 from 9:00pm until close.

Watch this space for more DJDeedle Live! dates and times. Goodbye 2006.

And a happy and healthy 2007 to all of you loyal listeners out there on the bunch of tubes they call the Internets.

Holiday Fruitcake

In order to maximize your holiday joy, I've decided to post this a little early. Deedlecast will return to its regular schedule on Friday the 29th.

Fruitcakes are an amalgamation and conglomeration of all kinds of things, some of which should never be placed in or near a cake. This Deedlecast is an amalgamation and conglomeration of holiday music and all kinds of unlikely tunes that you'd never have thought belonged together.

Unlike a fruitcake, however, you'll want to experience this mix over and over again and share it with friends and family. Like fruitcake, though, you'll want to avoid putting this Deedlecast in your mouth if you can help it.

Caution: Those who have an allergy to holidays may find that this Deedlecast may cause you to enjoy the holidays . . . even if just a little bit.

Program Notes:

Don't miss Deedlecast Live! at the Duplex Diner

David Hasselhoff is the Devil

"Why David Hasselhoff?" you ask. Why not?

It's been well documented that:

He has even less musical talent than John Tesh... His television shows are unwatchable... and yet He's one of the world's most popular stars... how has He done it?

I submit David Hasselhoff is the AntiChrist.

Caution: Hasselhoff's evil influence has placed a rude word or two in this Deedlecast.

Just Justin

What?! A Deedlecast entirely devoted to that second-rate talent, Justin Timberlake. The N-Sync guy? Teenage girls rejoice. Well, mash him up with other mediocre talents like Debbie Harry, Fergie, Robert Palmer, and Corey Hart, and you certainly get more than the sum of their rather talentless parts.

Warning: Justin uses a rude term in this Deedlecast. But then, what do you expect?

A Little Confusion

Willie Nelson, U-2, Pussycat Dolls, INXS, Henry Belafonte, the Bangles, the Beach Boys, Billy Joel, Eminem, Shakira, C&C Music Factory, Johnny Cash, Will Smith, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Isaak . . . What in the world are they doing in one place, let alone the same songs? This is truly confused. Trust your dj, though, it works!

She Blinded Me With Saturday All Night Long

Thanks to all the loyal Deedlecasters who came out to the Duplex last night. The event was quite a success, and Eric, the owner of the Duplex, has decided to make Deedlecast Live a regular event. I'll keep you posted on dates and times.

This song is a mashup single (Thomas Dolby v. Blowoff) I put together to be the night's "Saturday Song." As many of you know, whenever the Saturday Song plays, Eric passes out a free round of tasty shots.

The many requests to post this single mashup occasion this off-Friday post.

Stay tuned to this space for details of what will be regular episodes of Deedle at the Duplex.

Special thanks to Douglas for designing the new DJDeedle logo.

Into Space

According to NASA, November of 1982 was the first operational mission of the space shuttle. At that time, the space shuttle, Columbia, deployed two satellites.

DJDeedle honors this auspicious date 24 years ago with this space-themed Deedlecast.

Caution: Some of those astronauts have some colorful language.

DJ Troubleshoot Test

Live performance DJs bear the awesome responsibility of maintaining seemless quality sound, keeping an eye on all the tracks, channels, levels, volume, pan, fade, reverb, frequencies, gain, amplification, equalizers, etc., while at the same time making sure everyone is having a good time.

This week's Deedlecast give you a taste of the difficulties often encountered when an errant frequency exists in the system while the party continues.

Make sure to stop by the Duplex Diner this Sunday, November 12, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, for DJDeedle's first live Deedlecast. It's not to be missed!

Return of the Beat

The beat never really leaves Deedlecast. Like a heartbeat, it's necessary to keep Deedlecast alive. This week, DJDeedle puts a stethescope to the heart of Deedlecast to amplify that beat. The beat should not be confused with the groove, and the groove with the beat. It's most important not to allow the beat to drown out the groove. As always, DJDeedle strives to keep the beat beating and the groove grooving.

The Horror

Welcome to the frights and sounds of the first All Hallows Eve Deedlecast. Don't be afraid, you are not alone. Count Morbida and his lovely companion, Horribella, will be with you all the time. So will Sisqo, Michael Jackson, Vincent Price, Shannon, The Chordettes, Credence Clearwater Revival, and a host of others. Lots of horror movie tunes here.

And yes, that is the very eerie song from "the Shining" - "Midnight, the Stars and You," performed by the Ray Noble Orchestra.

DJDeedle's evil plan would have worked if not for those pesky kids.

The Last Mile

With the race just a couple of weeks away, your dj's thoughts have turned to the Marine Corps Marathon. 26 miles sounds like a long way. And believe me, it is.

But with the right tunes -- fast tempo when you need a push or slower when you want a break -- the time just flies by and the feet keep moving. DJDeedle presents another of the many mixes that keep his mind off his feet and knee joints. DJDeedle promises this is his last word on the marathon.

A Word from Our Sponsor

Don't worry, Deedlecast has not sold out and gone commercial. Rather, this week's show features mashups of hits from the 1960s and 1970s, interspersed with authentic radio commercials from 1963. DJDeedle thanks UBUWeb's 365 Day Project for collecting these commercial gems.

Deedlecast does not endorse Maxwell House Coffee, Yellow Cab, or any of the other products or companies featured in the advertisements.

Noise of Art

Art does not have to be pretty, nor does it have to be quiet. This Deedlecast certainly is neither. Also, I'm certain this is not what Justin Timberlake has in mind when he talks about bringing sexy back.

Kelley Clarkson, AC/DC, Pink, Genesis, Skinny Puppy . . . plus those singing strippers, the Pussycat Dolls. This could get downright ugly.

Do Your Thing

This week's Deedlecast is a collection of toe-tappers to help you to do your thing, whatever your "thing" may be. This Deedlecast contains two very different mashups of Christina Aguilera's recent hit, "Ain't No Other Man."

DJDeedle hopes this Deedlecast brings new life to your thing.

All Politics Are Local

Living in Washington, DC makes one a political animal whether one likes it or not. On Saturday, your dj and the Long-Suffering One attended a meet-and-greet for Marie Johns, candidate for DC mayor. If you happen to be lucky enough to be a DC resident, and are confused about who you'd like to vote for (since everyone in the city seems to be running this time), you might want to give Marie Johns a look.
Like most sensible people, I'm generally skeptical about anyone who wants to be mayor of DC. But after meeting her, and talking to her (the people at the meet and greet -- including me -- really grilled her), I think Ms. Johns stands head and shoulders above Fenty, Cropp, and the rest.
Fenty has no experience, and Cropp acts like it's her turn to be mayor. Orange, Brown, and all the rest don't have single new idea between them. I was impressed with Johns' considerable experience, dedication to the city, and her eagerness to answer frankly the tough questions on crime, the income gap, affordable housing, public health, HIV/AIDS, marriage equality, locally-owned business, and homelessness that we put to her. (See, I told you we grilled her) She seems to have real ideas and plans, not the polished and carefully crafted soundbites that you usually get from politicians. She also doesn't change her answers based on whether she's talking to 40 gay men at a cocktail party or a congregation at an African American church.
I know this sounds like a commercial, but I really was impressed. I urge you to stop by Ms. Johns' website and learn about her.

Oh, and by the way, she's funny too.

Deedlecast returns to its regular musical format on Friday, just in time for the holiday.

Stairways to Heaven

For lo these many years, gentle listener, DJDeedle has observed most faithfully a "no Stairway" policy in both his musical and personal affairs. But when the venerable WFMU collected over sixty (60) versions of Led Zeppelin's moldy classic, "Stairway to Heaven," how could a dj resist turning all those minutes of musical roadkill into musical overkill for your listening pleasure? Fear not. DJDeedle will not subject you to all sixty-plus versions. Rather, DJDeedle has reviewed them all, selected the gems, and distilled a them to about 40 minutes.
Trust me, after you've listened to this many versions of "Stairway to Heaven" you'll likely adopt a "no Stairway" policy of your own.

But Is It Legal?

Taking samples from other people's records is one of the most widespread and controversial aspects of computer music. The concept of using snippets of taped sounds to make collages of music is not new. Nowadays, it is easy for anyone to sample sections of recordings from LPs or CDs to make new recordings using your computer sequencer.
But is it legal?
Deedle's stance on this question can be found at About Deedlecast.
Feel free to ponder or ignore the question while you enjoy this week's Deedlecast.

Witness the Fitness

As many of you know, DJDeedle, along with the long suffering one and two dear friends of ours, are training for the Washington DC AIDS Marathon (aka Marine Corps Marathon). Although the torture of the training and the actual marathon are enough incentive, the real reason we are doing this is to raise money for the Whitman Walker Clinic, here in DC. As many of you know, the Clinic is the DC area's leading provider of direct medical care, food, housing, legal services, and other important services for those who have HIV or AIDS and don't have the means to pay. The Clinic was DJDeedle's neighbor for several years, and this dj has volunteered quite a lot of hours there. I can vouch for how vitally important their work is, and how truly grateful their clients are.

As one might imagine, this marathon requires quite a bit of training, consisting mainly of long runs. Fortunately, because Deedle possesses dj powers, he can make his own running mixes. This week Deedle presents just one of the many continuous musical works that keeps him running when the feet say, "no," the knees protest, and there are still miles left to run.

If you are so inclined, please stop by the Deedlecast team page (http://www.aidsmarathon.com/participant.asp?runner=DC-9614&EventCode=MC06) and make a contribution.* We appreciate it, and so do the clients of the Whitman Walker Clinic.

*Since we participants and the Marine Corps pay for all the expenses of the event, every cent our training team raises goes to support the Clinic. Also, your contributions are fully deductible.

Like It Was Yesterday (cross-posted from djdeedle.com)

C-C-C-Catch the Wave!

Let's revisit the 1980s! Not the Iran-Contra, Ivan Boesky, "mutually assured destruction," yuppies, Ronald Reagan, "Back to the Future," New Coke, Cabbage Patch dolls 1980s. I mean the MTV 1980s.

Remember all that great music? DJDeedle does too, just like it was yesterday.
This week's 40-minute extravaganza is a continuous mix of mashups of 80s artists from the Bangles, Robert Palmer, Hall & Oats, and Gary Newman, to David Byrne, Dead or Alive, ABC, and Human League.

Get Down Tonight

Rumors of the death of disco have been exaggerated for decades. As we all know, or should know, disco is a purely urban sound whose innovation made possible the rap, hip-hop, house, techno, and trance music we have today.
Disco lurks everywhere in modern music. But in this week's Deedlecast, modern music lurks in disco. So, put on your white satin jumpsuit with the wing collar and "get down tonight."

Summertime!

This is Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the summer season. Despite the heat and humidity here in our nation's capital, summertime is this dj's favorite time of the year.
In celebration of this auspicious season, DJDeedle presents a Deedlecast-length version of a full length album, entitled "Buena Vida," which some of you Deedle fans may remember from my days of mixing in cd format.

No mashups here, just pure summertime relaxation and fun for your drive to the beach, or settling back with a nice glass of iced tea at home here in the city.
As always, if you like the music you hear on Deedlecast, please support the artists by purchasing their music!

If you'd like a copy of the full-length cd, "Buena Vida," please just send me an email!

Beatlecast

Whether you were around or not when John, Paul, George and Ringo were the Beatles (the band broke up in 1970), you probably know the unique sound of the Beatles. Often imitated, but never duplicated, the Beatles' sound is immediately identifiable, no matter what some heretic with a sequencer, or computer, or mixing board might do to it.
This heretical collection of Beatles mashups represents the distillation of a huge number of mash works, including Deedle's very own "Come Tangerine Together."

What's So Great About the Good Old Days?

Click here to go to the Deedlecast

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.-- William Faulkner
Remember the good old days? No. Of course you don't. No one does really. At the time, they were neither good, nor old. That's beside the point, though. No matter how bad those days were at the time, there sure was some great music. Through the miracle of time travel, DJDeedle is able to bring back some of what was actually good about the good old days.

Plant Talk - The Latest Deedlecast

Click here to go to the Deedlecast.

Do you find that you are often too busy to talk to your plants, especially during this busy and critical springtime period? This busy DJ has the same problem. That's why DJDeedle has outsourced his plant talk to Molly Roth, who has so kindly recorded her soothing voice to encourage plants to grow in healthy and happy ways, and scold plant owners who treat them improperly.
DJDeedle feels that most all lifeforms, both flora and fauna, not only benefit from Ms. Roth's voice, but mashups as well. I hope the combination of the two has you flowering and branching out to your fullest potential.

Special thanks to WFMU for providing the incomparable Molly Roth.

Pastiche (pas-'tEsh) Ć¢?? n. (from Italian pasticcio) 1. a literary, artistic, musical, or architectural work that imitates the style of previous work; also: such stylistic imitation 2. a musical, literary, or artistic composition made up of selections from different works

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For many of the same reasons DJDeedle loves mashup music, he also loves pastiche. Actually, mashup is pastiche under the second definition above. Good pastiche crosses time as well as musical genre. This week's Deedlecast is dedicated to this type of music that lets us straddle years, decades, and even centuries.

Deedlecast's Got the Groove

Chillout is a musical genre well-known to DJDeedle, as his dj'ing interest was first piqued by a set of disks released by Ministry of Sound under that description. DJDeedle especially likes the genre because it encompasses such a wide variety of musical styles, from traditional jazz and pop, to hip-hop, trip-hop, disco, funk, world music, house, fusion, and acid jazz. It isn't so much the individual songs themselves that make them fall into the chillout category. Rather, it is the juxtaposition and interweaving of the disparate types of music that creates the ultimate effect, something greater than the individual songs themselves. Much like mashup music, but on a larger scale. Thus, it is quite the enjoyable challenge to create.

This Deedlecast features the work of The Grooveblaster who describes his music thusly:

". . . rhythms and melodies are rooted in
cosmopolitan pop and downtempo grooves,
so it's hard to tell where 'song' ends and
'version' begins, where message ends and music
begins, where agony ends and ecstasy kicks in."

With the greatest respect for The Grooveblaster's vision, DJDeedle has mixed the songs up a bit, and added a DJDeedle nudge or tweak here and there.

  1. Si Mi Caballero - Francoise Hardy Grooveblaster
  2. I Get Lifted - George McCrae
  3. Walk On By (Grooveblaster mix) - Dionne Warwick
  4. Smooth as Silk (Deedle's Interlude dub) - The Grooveblaster
  5. I Wish I Never Saw Sunshine - Beth Orton and The Grooveblaster
  6. In 1977 (When Josie Comes Home) - The Grooveblaster
  7. Charles Mingus - Love Chant - The Grooveblaster
  8. Romantic is the New Fantastic (Deedle's Cinemagraphic dub) - The Grooveblaster

Show Respect for Michael Jackson

Regardless of how very truly bizarre DJDeedle thinks Michael Jackson is today, in Michael’s childhood with the Jackson 5 and the part of his adulthood during the height of his solo career, Jacko was quite uniquely talented. Just as we should not confuse the drug-addled and overweight Elvis of the 1970’s with the young talented king of rock and roll, we should not allow Jackson’s present day “resident alien” status to obscure the many great songs of Jacko’s best days.

Given the great body of mashup work out there based on Jackson’s most loved songs, many mashup artists apparently agree with DJDeedle. It was quite the challenge to whittle the huge number of excellent Jackson bootlegs down to this 30 minute Deedlecast.

  1. Show Respect for Michael Jackson - James Kochalka Superstars

  2. MJ v. PCD - Aggro1 and Sam Flanagan

  3. Eminem v. Michael Jackson b. Justin - www.mei-lwun.com

  4. Robbie Over Jacko Under Pressure - Go Home Productions

  5. Michael Remembers Cheryl - c.h.a.o.s. Productions

  6. Justin Loves Jacko - Go Home Productions

  7. Michael Jackson v. Cookie Monster - Ted Shred

  8. The Thriller Thong - Sisqo Jackson

  9. Bad It On - Michael Jackson v. T.Rex

  10. Jackson 5 v. Celldweller - Aggro1

Brokeback (Deedle's Epilogue Mix)

The long suffering one purhcased the soundtrack to "Brokeback Mountain" on Itunes the other day. The album has seven achingly beautiful guitar songs by Gustavo Santaolalla. If you've seen the film, you know that Santaolalla's pieces play as vital a role as the Wyoming (actually Alberta) landscape in setting the mood. The music, like the scenery, was almost a character in the film.

So the long suffering one asks, "DJDeedle! Will you mix these seven Gustavo Santaolalla songs together into one mix of about ten or so minutes?" The songs are so sparse, and so melodically simple, that they were not difficult to sew and dub together into a seamless, thematic mix. With a few suggestions from the long suffering one that only made the mix even better, I present another off-the-Friday-cycle Deedlecast. I wanted to hold on to this Deedlecast for awhile, but just couldn't wait for you to hear it, dear loyal listeners! Consider it a bonus for subscribing or checking back often.

As always, if you enjoy DJDeedle's interpretation of these beautiful songs, please support the original artists by purchasing the entire album. (Tower Records is but one of the wonderful places to buy "Brokeback Mountain (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack).

DJDeedle cares about his small, but devoted, audience. Remember, the comment button is always available for you to provide feedback.

In Pace Resquiescat. Tu Ne's pas oubliƩ

Today would have been his sixteenth birthday. It's hard to believe he's been gone for over a year. There was never a better, more loyal, patient, sweet, loving, attentive, well-behaved, constant, or adorable companion. There was also never a companion more loved or missed.

This isn't a Deedlecast. It's a single song called "I'll Be There" by Weekend Players that I remixed into a four and a half minute version. I intend to make a short film as a tribute with all the photos and film clips I have of him, set to my extended mix. The mix is called "I'll Be There (Deedle's Sleepiest-sleepy-sleep mix)."

I chose this song out of myriad options because, through good and bad, he was there for me. He was there when I was living in Dallas just after graduating college, didn't know a soul in town, and found out that I'd passed the CPA exam. I had just gotten him, and we danced and celebrated together. He was there at the airport when I came home from England after a seven day coma and a near miss with spinal menengitis. I remember being in the hospital just wanting to get back to the states to him.

He was there all through law school and the bar exam, and all the late nights and stresses. Friends and boyfriends came in and out of my life, but he was always there for me with his unwavering love and support. With all the vicissitudes of school and career, we moved a lot in his fifteen years. We lived in Dallas, Austin, and DC. It didn't matter to him, as long as he was there with me. We went to MontrƩal, Provincetown, California, Oklahoma, New York, Ohio, and all over Texas together. He loved the car, and he was always so good on the plane that I was able to carry him on in one of those pet bags, so happy to be going along, never making a sound under the seat. He just wanted to go with, and hated to be left behind.

Happy birthday. You are never forgotten and are always with me.

Kaua'i Relocation

As many of you know, DJDeedle's signal has been relocated temporarily to the island of Kaua'i, Hawaii, and this week's Deedlecast eminates from there. Commensurate with DJDeedle's vacationing mood, this episode is a relaxing melange of many musical flavors, hues, and textures.

Aloha, and thank you for your kokua!

Don't worry. DJDeedle has not foresaken his kind listeners. There will be another Deedlecast from Washington, DC next Friday.

New Deedlecast Episode

This episode of Deedlecast is a little change of tempo. First, it is a showcase of one of my favorite mashup artists, Alex C. You may have noticed in the previous episodes that mashups tend to be fairly busy pieces of music. There are a number of reasons for this, one of which being that when one mixes what are originally two or more finished and complete songs together, no matter how much technology we throw at them, sometimes there are a few imperfections where the songs just won't mesh. The abundance of beats melodies and such can be used to obscure these imperfections and render them virtually undetectible (except to the artist who will hear them forever).

Alex C, is perhaps the most gifted of mashup artists because his creations aren't so busy, and yet the imperfections just aren't there. His work tends to be a mixture of more mellow pop songs, jazz, and down-tempo music, where obscuring tiny flaws just isn't possible. Granted, Alex C has professional training and experience as a dj, and is not merely an amateur as most bootleggers and mashup artists are. That fact, however, should not mininize the high level of raw talent required to imagine and create these gems. This Deedlecast is just a small sample of of his considerable and diverse oeuvre that I particularly enjoy.
  1. Holiday Shout
  2. Dirty One Note Samba
  3. Mike vs. Macy
  4. A Grand Love Theme
  5. If You Can't Make No Sound
  6. Fanfare of My Name
  7. The World's Gonna Sort You Out
  8. Pick Up the Fine Day

Now, a new episode of Deedlecast, cooked right here in Washington, DC.

This episode features DJ Paul V's wonderful mashup, "The Daily Show vs Audio Bullies vs Aerosmith - Cheney's Got A Gun." Funny stuff, and quintessential inside-the-beltway political (and dark) humor. Also in this episode is Alex H's "KillaVanilla" (Vanilla Ice v. almost everyone), as well as Knackwurst's "Bat Power" and DJ Lance Lockarm's "Bring the Muzic Back." "It's Easy Girls on Film" is my own sendup of Duran Duran. "Seven" and "It Was Easy" are my interpretations as well.
