Coordinated Universal Time

As you listen to this week's Deedlecast, DJDeedle is very likely making the long journey across time zones from Eastern to Hawaiian.  With the start of daylight saving time last week, and all these time zones to consider this week, telling time is getting a bit confusing.  It doesn't matter what time it is or what time zone you happen to be in, because this week everyone is on Coordinated Universal Time.

Discipline

Shocking Monkey Business (Single)

What do Peter Gabriel, Human League, Don Ho, Timo Maas, and the Monkees have in common?  Ordinarily nothing.  DJDeedle couldn't let Charles Darwin's 200th birthday pass without a linvolving all those artists in some shocking monkey business. 

Happy belated birthday, Charles.  We owe you for your brilliant theory that makes all modern biology possible, and for all the shockingly fun monkey business it has caused.

Slumdoghouse

Though DJDeedle isn't one to glom on to movies just because they win awards, for some weeks since the movie's release, he's been captivated by the music from Slumdog Millionaire, this year's Oscar winner for Best Picture, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song.

This week, DJDeedle takes liberties with the movie's score as well as the sounds of the subcontinent, from Bhangra to Bollywood.

Downloading

Computers, the internet, and digital technology have altered forever the relationship between musical artists and their fans and listeners.  Digital artists, particularly bootleggers, have altered this relationship further using computers to rework classics and forgotten favorites, weaving them into the unique 21st Century sound, not quite old, and not entirely new.

The "download," the essential ethereal link between you and DJDeedle, is the last step in the creative process.  Without the magic of the download, Deedlecast would not be possible.  This week's Deedlecast salutes the efficient and effective system by which you get your weekly dose of the 21st Century sound. 

"Downloading" marks the third anniversary of DJDeedle's podcasts. For 156 weeks now, DJDeedle has brought you the freshest sounds around, indulging his passion for mashup, remix, sound collage, and electronic esoterica. The some 6,240 minutes of thus far of Deedlecast have been a joy to fashion and provide, and DJDeedle looks forward to many many more.  So, once again, this week, as with that week in February 2006 and every week since, face the music with DJDeedle.

AudiObama

Today is George Washington's birthday, and yesterday was Abraham Lincoln's.  On Monday, because everyone likes a Monday off, we honor the births of these two American presidents who saved the nation from threats to its very existence.  Today, though, DJDeedle honors our new president, Barack Obama, who singlehandedly changed to tempo of the nation at this critical time.  For the next four years, maybe eight, we dance to the beat of DJ Obama.  

Although DJDeedle finally settled on the title, "AudiObama," several worthy titles were suggested:  "ObamAudio," "Barack Me Amadeus," and "Barackman Turner Overdrive."

Neon Sound

DJDeedle takes element number 10, neon,
and turns it into pure sound.  Like the luminous noble gas itself, neon
music is sometimes smooth, sometimes rough, sometimes soothing, and
sometimes harsh; but, DJDeedle promises to spare you that horrible
flickering buzz that comes from failing neon signs.

Loving New York

There are as many ways to love New York as there are things to

Musicogenic Seizures

 

Musicogenic epilepsy is a form of reflex or affective epilepsy, and involves autonomic, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional reactions to selected musical stimuli.  The associated musicogenic seizures are generally believed to be caused by the juxtaposition of musical sounds and frequencies that are incomprehensible to the human brain, or that evoke emotional reactions shocking to the psyche.

 
Sound frightening?  It's just the normal state of things on Deedlecast, and this week's Deedlecast is designed to get all your synapses firing:  This is your brain on music.  If you happen to be prone to such seizures, please refrain from enjoying Deedlecast while driving or operating heavy machinery.

Mixtape Essential

Once the cornerstone of hand-made mixing, the art of the mixtape essentially has been lost, a casualty of sometimes cruel technological progress and fickle fashion.  Somehow, a drag-and-drop iTunes playlist just doesn't have the magic of a lovingly and painstakingly crafted mixtape labored over for hours in unglamorous real-time analog.  The casette tape has gone the way of the dodo, and even the compact disk rides off into the technological sunset.

But there is life after life for the mixtape in the virtual afterworld: a place where every song is selected with utmost care, enjoyed in real-time, every minute savored, and variety and innovation transcending what many saw as the cramped and archaic medium of the cassette tape.   DJDeedle presents the mixtape essentials.  A salute to cassette culture.

Caution:  As with any good mixtape, there are few choice words in this one.

The Hepcat Club

Hipsters, flipsters, and finger-poppin' daddies -- knock me your lobes.

Hipster or Hepcat, as used in the 1940s, referred to aficionados of jazz, in particular modern jazz, which became popular in the early '40s. The hipster adopted the lifestyle of the jazz musician, including their manner of dress, slang terminology, use of cannabis and other drugs, relaxed attitude, sarcastic humor, self-imposed poverty, and relaxed sexual codes.

What does it mean to be hip? The hip thing is to be able to perform the exactly appropriate action at all times, and that not easy, daddio.  When in doubt, be cool. That's all there is to it.

Regardless of whether you are hepcat or a square, this week, DJDeedle's got you covered and will get you into this 21st Century reinterpretation of the Hepcat Club.

Macheesmo: Empowerment in the Kitchen

DJDeedle's friend, Nick, has launched a tasty new website all about food.  Nick calls his creation, "Macheesmo." 

What is Nick's website all about? 

Food
and cooking have become much too serious. This thing which should be
fun and somewhat whimsical, but at the same time essential, has been
lost to a world of processed, fast, and unhealthy food. The goal of
this site is to explore cooking and food and also show people that it
can be fun, exciting, and rewarding.

What does "Macheesmo" mean?  Let Nick tell you:

is about empowerment in the kitchen. I want people to feel confident
around food. One thing that we can control is what we eat and what we

When
