Skylab

On February 8, 1974, the final astronaut crew of the orbiting Skylab splashed down.  Sadly, Skylab, humankind's first foray into inhabiting space, would tumble to Earth in 1979.  This week, DJDeedle honors the memory of the star of 1970s science with some 21st Century sounds.  All the fun of being in orbit, without the messy burning up in the atmosphere.

Everyone gets the blues sometimes, particularly in the cold winter months. The blues don't have to be a bad thing, so long as they are electric blues. This week, turn up the heat, and go electric - Electric Blue.

New New Wave

The New Wave phenomenon of the 1980s brought a new sound and beat to the music world. Bands like Orchestral Manoeuvers in the Dark and New Order pioneered the groundbreaking sound that changed music forever. It's been decades since the New Wave was new. Now, in honor of the new year, DJDeedle reinvigorates the New Wave sound of synth-based twitchy melodies, with agitated rhythm guitars, fast tempos, as well as those stop-and-start song structures and melodies so characteristic of the genre. This Deedlecast starts off with a DJDeedle original remix of OMD's "Sister Marie," which captures the sound and rhythm of New Wave, updated for 2011.

Warp Factor

Dracula Who (Single)

It's no secret that DJDeedle is a "Whovian"  (a big "Doctor Who" fan, for those of you non-Whovians).  That's one reason he's so excited that BBC America has decided to air the annual Doctor Who Christmas Special on Christmas Day-- the same day it airs in the UK!  A ripping good present for the holiday.  DJDeedle's so excited, in fact, that he wants to share his joy and anticipation with his loyal listeners by airing a special single mashup.  A little Whovian Christmas cracker, if you will.

This single is a DJDeedle original mashup of Basement Jaxx' thumping new single, "Dracula," and the Doctor Who Theme (Mood Version) by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire, both sewn together by DJDeedle, and decorated with various Doctor Who sounds and effects from DJDeedle's Whovian library.

Just in time for cold and flu season, DJDeedle's gone viral. Unlike those nasty bugs, you'll want to catch this virus, particularly because the infectious beat of Alexander Fog's "H1N1" gets caught up in DJDeedle's music masher versus Mint Royale's "Sexiest Man In Jamaica;" then, like any good virus, returns again later as a new strain with other virulently catchy and irresistible sounds.

The Pop Cycle

Like art, music has cycles, particularly pop music. No matter what era a pop tune belongs, it comes around again and again, reborn, reworked or just ripped off and recycled. The secret of pop art is taking cliché, iconic, or obvious subjects and transforming them into something new, vibrant, and relevant. This week, DJDeedle applies the pop art method to pop music, taking some of those tired and overworked sounds from the pop cycle, and giving them new meaning.
