Frequency Response

Frequency response is the measure of any system's output spectrum in response to an input signal. Spell Rhythm

The Speak & Spell was introduced at the summer Consumer Electonics Show in June of 1978. Created by a small team of engineers at Texas Instruments, the Speak & Spell's speech technology was groundbreaking in that it introduced artificial speech technology to the mass market, albeit in an educational toy.

This week, DJDeedle weaves in some of that 32 year old speech technology to test, not your spelling, but your innate sense of rhythm.

Axe to Grind

 

It's the icon of youth rebellion, and it made rock music as we know it possible.  This week, DJDeedle salutes the electric guitar, the axe, the tool Jimmi Hendrix, the Beatles, Slash, Jimmy Page, Prince, Johnny Ramone, and a multitude of other notables used to carve out the unforgettable riffs and sounds of the rock era.  

This week, the guitar greats grind their axes DJDeedle style.

DiscoTech

Portishead 2010

The unmistakable sound of Portishead returns to Deedlecast this week. You'll recognize the pops, scratches, and stutters created by keyboardist/multi-istrumentalist, Geoff Barrow, that create the perfect glitchcore frame for Beth Gibbons' lyrical, haunting voice. But the Portishead of 2010 has been given a harder edge, a gritty makeover.

Off the Record

In the 1980s, the days of the record album were eclipsed by the cassette tape, with a new kind of hiss, fast forward, and rewind. The age of the boom box dawned, and soon we were almost entirely off the record.

This week DJDeedle, through digital means, pulls some of those sounds previously trapped in desultory analog off the record and off the tape, bringing them together, minus the hiss, with sounds of a new era. Love it or hate it. Say what you want about 80s music, it's all off the record.

MTV Generation

 

DJDeedle remembers fondly that day back in the 80s when video killed
the radio star.  Music videos were something new and amazing, and MTV
arrived on the scene to provide them to us on cable. But not for
everyone. One had to beg the local cable company to carry MTV.  

To be truly part of the MTV generation, one has to remember the
excitement when MTV dawned, and VJs ruled the television, serving us
hour after hour of brit pop, synth pop, new wave, rock, and even some
mainstream rap (and ultimately some hip-hop).  New artists, like
Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Bryan Adams, and Thomas Dolby arrived on our
screens, daily.  And groups like Yaz, U2, Duran Duran, Wham, the Cure,
the Smiths, and the Police echoed from every school dance, prom, and
boom box.  

 

This week, DJDeedle salutes his generation, the MTV generation.
 We're responsible for all those one-hit wonders from the 80s we now
hear in elevators and waiting rooms everywhere.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

 

Perhaps slightly more that most Deedlecasts, this week's show may
have you thinking "WTF?" Well, April Fool's Day was yesterday, and
DJDeedle can't let that pass without subjecting you to a collection of
gems. And yes, there is even some tango.

Computer Menace

 

Sometimes computers can be a menace, simultaneously taking over the
world while at the same time teetering precariously and threatening to
crash and take our civilization and all our hard work down with them.
Last week, we worked out the glitches.  This week we deal directly with
the computer threat itself.

Glitch

 

Even the smoothest running system can encounter a glitch or two. In
digital music, bit rate reduction, digital distortion, hardware noise,
computer bugs, crashes and system errors can ruin an otherwise flawless
musical composition or performance, and be the source of endless agony
and frustration.  But sometimes, used in the right way, glitches can
work a kind of magic on an otherwise mundane sound.  

What is interesting about the glitch aesthetic is that it is hard to
tell sometimes what sounds are "erroneously" produced, and which are
intentional.  

This week's Deedlecast is presented in its unedited entirety,
glitches and all, and hopefully better for it.
